Berklee College of Music is now offering its online course, Introduction to Music Production, free through Coursera.
The six-week course is open to anyone and is comprised of 6-8 hours per week of coursework, including video lessons, quizzes and homework. For $49, students can also opt to earn a certificate of completion that can be used towards Berklee’s “Modern Musician Verification” online track.
The course is geared towards musicians and producers with a basic knowledge of music production, mixing and mastering. Weekly topics include: signal flow, the DAW, the mixer, dynamic effects, filters and delay effects, and synthesis.
Enrollment for Introduction to Music Production is open right now and the course officially begins October 13. Each week, new lesson content will be uploaded, along the the chance to have your coursework reviewed by your peers taking the course.
As universities and music schools have scrambled to offer high quality online education, Berklee has consistently paved the way. Earlier this year we reported on their released free digital music handbooks.
Like many other industries, the music world has been radically transformed by new technology and distribution channels. While becoming proficient in mixing and mastering still requires a great deal of learning, it’s never been easier to access helpful information for becoming a better recording engineer. Through blogs, video tutorials and courses like this one from Berklee, you can cut down the time it takes to become a great producer significantly.
