How to Get Expert Mixing Feedback

1. Join a Mixing Community

Although mixing communities aren’t common, they offer an effective way to discover what is and what isn’t working in your mix. Sage Audio offers perhaps the only professional online mixing community in which you can upload your mix and receive feedback from hundreds of other engineers.

The process is similar to any other form of social media - you upload your track and make a post, and other mixing engineers can listen to your mix and respond with comments.

You’ll receive notifications whenever someone makes a comment about your mix, and you can interact with both members and Sage Audio engineers to get clarification or simply show your gratitude for their time.

Some engineers use the platform to have their masters reviewed as well.

2. Reach Out to a Professional

Although it is more challenging to receive feedback this way, you can reach out to a professional mixing engineer and ask for feedback. You may not receive a response, but it’s worth trying if there’s an engineer you admire who works in a similar genre.

Sometimes, engineers will allow you to sit in on a session and review their work process if you request politely. This, of course, isn’t the same as having your mix reviewed, but it will likely give you valuable insight into how professional records are mixed.

3. Share with Friends

The most common method for receiving feedback on mixes is to reach out to family and friends. Although they may not be experts, they’ll still be able to tell you if something sounds “off.”

This can prove frustrating since the exact problems in a mix are often difficult for casual listeners to address, but common issues like “I can’t hear the vocals too well” or “the bass is too loud” will give you a clear indication of what you need to address.

Although the feedback from family and friends may not be as specific as you’d like, casual listeners will ultimately be the ones who listen to your mix, so take their thoughts into consideration.
